Understanding the Evolving Policy and Regulatory Environments in Academic Medicine*
Date: October 20, 2026
Time: 7:00 am to 8:30 am
Room: Coral 4
Track: Leaders in IDEAS Professional Development Workshop
Session Description
Across academic medicine, leaders responsible for IDEAS initiatives are navigating a rapidly evolving and increasingly complex policy environment. Recent federal executive orders, legal challenges, state legislation, institutional responses, and shifting regulatory expectations have created significant uncertainty surrounding IDEAS-related programming, faculty development, trainee support, recruitment practices, educational content, and organizational communications. These changes carry important implications for academic departments as they work to balance institutional mission, accreditation standards, legal compliance, workforce priorities, and community trust while responding to evolving external pressures and guidance.
This session is designed to provide participants with a clearer understanding of the changing federal, state, and institutional policy landscape and its implications for academic medicine. The program will begin with a 45-minute presentation from a national legal and policy expert with experience in academic medicine, highlighting key compliance considerations and the impact of executive orders and regulatory frameworks on departmental and institutional practices. The presentation will be followed by a 45-minute interactive discussion focused on shared experiences, practical challenges, and collaborative problem-solving as participants explore strategies for navigating ongoing uncertainty and adapting IDEAS-related efforts within evolving policy environments.

At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe recent federal, state, and institutional policy developments affecting IDEAS-related work in academic medicine.
- Examine how evolving policies and regulatory frameworks may influence departmental initiatives, educational programs, recruitment practices, and organizational decision-making.
