Benson Chen, MBChB, PhD, FRACP, is an academic neurologist with subspecialty expertise in neuro-ophthalmology. He completed neurology training at Auckland City Hospital before undertaking a clinical and research fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Emory Eye Center, Atlanta, Georgia. He subsequently completed doctoral studies and a clinical research fellowship in mitochondrial disease with the mitoCAMB group at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the lived experiences of people affected by Leber hereditary optic neuropathy and dominant optic atrophy. Dr Chen’s current research, funded by the Neurological Foundation (New Zealand), focuses on understanding how neurological disease affects vision and vision-related quality of life. His current research aims to define clinically meaningful outcomes in conditions such as multiple sclerosis and idiopathic intracranial hypertension, with a particular emphasis on patient-reported outcomes. He is also involved in work evaluating quality of life measures in rare neurogenetic disorders, including Friedreich ataxia, through international collaborative studies.
