Silvère Van der Maarel, PhD, is a human geneticist trained at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center where he contributed to the positional cloning of X‑linked disease genes. He is professor of medical epigenetics and chair of the Department of Human Genetics at Leiden University Medical Center. His research focuses on the genetic and epigenetic regulation of repetitive DNA in human disease, with a primary emphasis on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD).
