Mercedes Paredes, MD, PhD, FANA, is a professor in the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience, Developmental and Stem Cell Biology and Biomedical Sciences graduate programs at UCSF. Her lab focuses on identifying features of neuronal progenitor proliferation and migration that are unique to the gyrated brain, such as in humans, with an emphasis on the perinatal period. The team combines cellular and genetic approaches to investigate the developing human brain across prenatal and neonatal stages; these ground truths are used for functional analysis in large animal models that faithfully mimic human neurodevelopment. As a physician scientist, she also works with clinical investigators to ensure patient perspectives are incorporated into research goals.
