Martin Kampmann, PhD

University of California, San Francisco
Martin Kampmann, PhD, is the Dorothy Bronson Professor at UCSF’s Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Cambridge University and his PhD at Rockefeller University. His goal is to uncover molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neurodegenerative diseases. He co-invented CRISPRi/CRISPRa screening and pioneered CRISPR-based screens in human brain cell types. More recently, his lab established mouse in vivo CRISPR screening platforms. Key discoveries include the first molecular description of neurons selectively vulnerable in Alzheimer’s Disease in the human entorhinal cortex, key mechanisms controlling tau aggregation and spreading and regulators of disease-relevant states of microglia and astrocytes.
